Obituary for Daniel Schiff

Daniel  Schiff
Daniel J. Schiff, 90, of Johnston City, passed away at 9:55 p.m., Sunday, September 9, 2018 at his residence with his loving family by his side.

D.J. was born May 18, 1928 in Johnston City to Adam and Wendolyn (Herbert) Schiff. He married Gloria Dean English on January 14, 1950 in Johnston City. They shared 67 years of marriage together before she preceded him in death on June 22, 2017.

D.J. served his country honorably with the United States Navy. He was employed at Red Ball Parking Meters in Benton. Dan also oversaw and managed several oil wells. He later owned and operated Coal Belt Fire Equipment in Johnston City for over 40 years. He also had taught drafting at SIU-C at its VTI Campus in Carterville. He later operated Lazy Day Delivery Service.

D.J. was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Johnston City. He was also a member of the Knight’s of Columbus. He loved all animals but he was especially fond of his dogs. He never met a stranger and loved to visit with people and socialize. His greatest love in his life was his wife, Gloria and his daughters and grandchildren, whom he cherished spending time with.


D.J. is survived by two daughters, Gwendolyn Coulson of Cape Girardeau and Laura (Rick) Cobb of Johnston City; son-in-law, Randy Brymer Johnston City; three grandchildren, Danny (Michelle) Brymer, Derek (Mary Friess) Coulson and Ashley (Jordan Williams) Cobb all of Johnston City; five great-grandchildren, Cole and Shelby Brymer, Alec and Brayden Coulson and Sadie Brooke Cobb;
He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Deneil
Brymer and a sister, Juanita Hansford.

Gwen & Laura want to give a special thank you to D.J.’s caregivers who took wonderful care of their father, Shirley #1, Becky, Cheryl, Shirley #2, Lisa, Caroline and Carrie.

Funeral Mass will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 14, 2018 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Johnston City with Fr . Brian Barker officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City. Military rites will be accorded by the Marion VFW and members of the United States Navy Military Honors Team.

Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Pyle Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.

Pyle Funeral Home in Johnston City is entrusted with the arrangements.
