Obituary for Jim Mitchell

Jim Mitchell, 74, of Johnston City, passed away 1:15 p.m., Tuesday, January 1, 2019 in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion with his loving family by his side.

Jim was born November 21, 1944 in West Frankfort to L. Grant & Jeannette (Ozment) Mitchell. He married Jean Marie “Jeannie” Duvall on March 17, 1989 in Paducah.

Jim was a 1962 graduate of Johnston City High School. He later graduated from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale with a degree in vocational education.

Jim loved his hometown and was currently serving as Mayor of Johnston City. He had also served on the city council for many years before becoming Mayor. He had also served as a precinct committeeman in Williamson County for several years.

Jim was a veteran of the United States Army having served his country honorably. He was a sales agent with Modern Woodmen of America since 2003. He had previously worked for the Illinois Department of Transportation before retiring in 2002.

While he was growing up, he was very involved in Boy Scouts. His dedication and determination awarded him the honor of being an Eagle Scout. He was also very active with the volunteering of his time to Boy Scout Troop #19 of Johnston City and was awarded the Silver Beaver award for his volunteerism. He formerly served as District Commissioner for the Boy Scouts in the Egyptian District of Southern Illinois.

Jim was a longtime member of the First Christian Church in West Frankfort. He was a member of Lake Creek Masonic Lodge #729 of Johnston City. He was also a member of the Williamson County Shrine Club where he enjoyed being a clown at numerous Shrine functions for children.

Survivors include his wife, Jeannie Mitchell of Johnston City; daughter, Misty (Tom) Whittington of Carterville; son, Grant (Abby) Mitchell of Johnston City; step-son, Glenn (D’Anne) Stephenson of McKinney, TX; one grandson, Trevor Whittington of Carterville; two sisters, Ruth Alice Wolfe of Climax Springs, MO and Melody (Mike) Kazmi of Overland Park, KS; sister-in-law, Marilyn Mitchell of West Frankfort and brother-in-law, Jeff Duvall of Marion. He is also survived by several special nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bill Mitchell.

Celebration of life service will be 12:00 p.m., Saturday, January 5, 2019 at the First Christian Church (1001 S. Cherry Street in West Frankfort) with Tim Uhles, Bryan Harris and Jason Tanner officiating. Military rites will be accorded by the Marion VFW Post 1301 and members of the Illinois National Guard Military Honors Team concluding the services at the church.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday at the church.

In honor of his request his cremains will be scattered at a later date near the Pine Ridge Scout Camp in Jackson County.

Memorial contributions may be made the Shriners Hospital for Children and the
Johnston City Activity Fund. Memorial envelopes will be available at the church the day of the service.
