Donald R.  Gaddis
Donald Ray Gaddis, 76, of Herrin, died peacefully at his residence on Sunday, February 17, 2019.

Don was born March 3, 1942 in Johnston City to Joseph and Ethel (Hayes) Gaddis. He was a 1960 graduate of Johnston City High School. He served honorably in the U.S. Army, being trained as a military policeman, serving mostly in Germany and during the Berlin Wall Crisis.

Don married Sharon Sexton, his wife of 54 years, on August 8, 1964. They were the parents of two sons and one daughter, seven granddaughters, and two great-grandsons.

Don began his career as an apprentice and then became a journeyman in the heating and air conditioning field. He was a 53 year member of the Sheet Metal Workers Local #268 and was a retired HVAC superintendent and estimator.

Don was of the Christian faith and volunteered years of help to numerous churches, while always offering assistance to those in need. In his retirement he enjoyed having coffee with his buddies, mowing his lawn, and spending time with granddaughters.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon; sons, Joe Gaddis of Herrin and Jimmy (Kristi) Gaddis of Huntsville, AL; daughter, Gina (Brian) Carey of St. Louis; granddaughters, Crystal (Eric) Ness of Myrtle Beach, SC; Maegan Carey of Shiloh, Cassy (Eric) Williamson of St. Louis, Alyssa Gaddis of Huntsville, AL, Kambrie (Wesley) Barnes of Ft. Campbell, KY, Madison Carey of Chicago, Kelsie Gaddis of Hope Mills, NC; two great-grandsons, Kameron and Devon Pridgen of North Carolina; two brothers, Val Dean (Annie) Gaddis of Albuquerque, NM, Charles (Almeda) Gaddis of Marion; sister, Pat (Dennis) Wallace of West Frankfort; brothers-in-law, Paul (Jeanetta) Sexton, Tom (Imogene) Sexton; sisters-in-law, Mary Jane (Ken) Cooper, Connie (Jerry) Chapman and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joseph, Bob, Kenny and Lester Gaddis; sister, Betty Williams; brothers-in-law, Don and Gary Sexton; and sisters-in-law, Evelyn Nation, Betty Farris, and Mildred Hale.

The family wishes to thank the many caring individuals that assisted in Don’s care in the recent months. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or Southern Illinois Parkinson’s Support Group, P.O. Box 266, Carbondale, IL. 62903

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, February 22, 2019 at Pyle Funeral Home in Johnston City with Rev Donnie Colson officiating. Eulogy will be given by his son-in-law, Brian Carey. Interment will follow in Herrin City Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by the Herrin VFW Post #1567, Carterville American Legion Post #347 and members of the Illinois National Guard Military Honors Team.

Visitation will be 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
